School Publications Unit

WHAT IS THE SCHOOL PUBLICATIONS UNIT (SPU)?
The SPU is a department of the Division of Educational Services (DES) in the Ministry of Education (MOE). It is the MOE’s own publishing house with an attached printery.

The Unit’s products are mainly supplementary teacher and student texts, viz. the Educational Journal of Trinidad and Tobago, the School Paper and other supplementary texts. These are generated through the development of manuscripts which is done through research and writing (by Publications Officers), commissioning or procurement.

The services of the SPU also include the production of print materials for other departments of the MOE.
 
WHO MAKES UP THE SPU?
The Supervisor of School Publications, four School Publications Officers 1 and a School Publications Assistant are the scheduled posts which make up the editorial staff, the Supervisor being the Editor-in-Chief.

Production staff is made up of a Printing Supervisor 1, a Varitypist (A Computer Typesetter) and Printing Operators of ranges 1 – 4. These include Binders, Press and pre-press Operators.

Clerical and manipulative staff are also included.

WHEN WAS THE UNIT FOUNDED?
The Unit was founded in the mid-sixties by the Government of T&T with assistance from UNESCO.

WHY WAS IT FOUNDED?
The Unit was founded mainly to address the need for more endogenous materials in the school system of T&T and to provide a mechanism for the evaluation of instructional materials. The role of evaluation was shifted from the Unit to the Textbook Evaluation Committee (TEC) in the early eighties. Today the SPU’s role is mainly to provide resources which are supplementary to the curriculum, e.g., enrichment material for students and teachers. It is also a critical component in the creation of multi-media materials.
