Ministry of Education welcomes 250 new teachers
On Thursday 1st December 2016, the Ministry of Education hosted an orientation session for two hundred and fifty (250) beginning teachers 2016-2017 for secondary and primary levels at the MIC-Institute of Technology Head Office, Macoya. Dr. the Honourable Lovell Francis, Minister of State in the Ministry of Education welcomed the new teachers to the Ministry of Education and offered his perspective and personal experience on what the profession entails.
Reflecting on his past in the teaching service, Minister Francis quoted Kenrick Seepersad, former Chief Education Officer of the Ministry of Education saying, “The base value of a good teacher, is that regardless of how you perform, you are worth listening to.” Minister Francis also reminded the teachers why their role was important. He said, “You have a fundamental chance to orient, condition and to fundamentally teach young people, preparing them for life and for citizenship. For all the things that come with functioning as a citizen in the nation.”
Echoing the theme of the orientation “Transitioning from Student Teachers to Teachers of Students”, Minister Francis said, “I’m asking you to be the kind of teacher who cares about the student. I’m asking you to be the kind of teacher who teaches, who wants to see these young people develop; the kind of teacher who create, for us, citizens.” Another session will be held tomorrow, Friday 2nd December, 2016 to complete the orientation.
Spearheaded by the Teaching and Teacher Development Division, the session included short presentations on what was expected of a teacher and the ways to achieve it.
